This module defines chiropractic and discusses the
approach to healthcare as contrasted with a medical doctor (MD). Chiropractors
diagnose and treat patients whose health problems are associated with the body's
muscular, nervous, and skeletal systems, especially the spine. Chiropractors believe
that interference with these systems impairs the body's normal functions and lowers
its resistance to diseases. They also hold that spinal or vertebral dysfunction
alters many important body functions by affecting the nervous system and that
skeletal imbalance through joint or articular dysfunction, especially in the
spine, can cause pain. Chiropractic has grown to be the second largest group of
primary care physicians in the United States.
The various methods and philosophy of treatment
will be described. Demographics and educational requirements will be presented.
Licensing, regulatory oversight, and the scope of practice will be delineated.
The duties and responsibilities of the chiropractor will be depicted.
An introduction to medical terminology will be presented.
Upon completion of this module,
the participant will be able to:
• Distinguish between restrictive, expansive or intermediate scope of practice
• Understand common medical terminology
